CommitCRM defaulted to importing labor items from QuickBooks as "per unit" labor type, turns out as we get more familiar with CommitCRM what we need are "per hour" for all of our labor. The problem is that any older items that we have already used are unable to be updated because they "cannot be modified once charges are created for this item".

We're on v5.6, do the newer versions allow this update or is there a workaround other than creating new items?

While 5.6 is an old version of RangerMSP this specific behavior hasn't changed. Once you use an Item as 'by Units' or as 'by Hours' it cannot be then changed or else this might damage the data/reports integrity. You should probably create a new set of Items in RangerMSP and link them to the parallel Items in QuickBooks, whether new ones or existing ones already linked to the 'other' Items (you need to unlink it first).

Regardless of this feature, we recommend that you consider an upgrade :-)
