way to delete all data without losing preferences?

is there a way to delete all data without losing preferences? or do I need to start from scratch? and if I need to start from scratch do I need a different install code or can I reuse the original one?

I should add we are using the SQL version

You can delete or deactivate the records you no longer need, however, in case you really need to wipe out all data and start from scratch this will will require a new installation and a new activation and your preferences/settings/configurations will be lost during this process.
