We have just moved from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online and have successfully set up the connection with RangerMSP.

However, we are now left with around 3,000 accounts and 500 items that need to manually linked to the QBO item that they were previously connected to.

Is the linking to QBO exposed via the API at all, so that we could investigate creating the links programmatically?

Thank you for posting this.

Unfortunately not, and in any case, the behind-the-scenes implementation of both integrations is different. The root cause for all this is that the internal record IDs used in QuickBooks Online are entirely different than the original ones for the same records in QuickBooks Desktop.

For what it's worth, you don't necessarily need to link all customers up-front. Instead, when invoicing a customer for the first time (i.e. invoicing to QBO) you'll be asked to create such a link, so this may save some up-front work.

It is important to link items between RangerMSP and QuickBooks, otherwise the invoice' lines will be created using default items (e.g. CMT Service Taxable Item).
Again, this means that you do not necessarily have to link them all up-front (assuming relying on default items is fine with you). It may be anyhow enough to first link the most commonly used items.

You can also learn more about how to switch to QuickBooks Online from QuickBooks Desktop.

Hope this helps.

My understanding is as follows.
Quickbooks Online is not the cloud equilvalent of what we all knew to be Quickbooks Desktop
In Australia, Quickbooks Desktop became Reckon Desktop and is owned by a company called Reckon.
The cloud version of Quickbooks (aka Reckon) Desktop is Reckon Accounts Desktop Hosted, and this very closely matches the old Quickbooks Desktop.

All this came about because of a split in the relationship between Intuit and Reckon. I'm not sure of the details, but it looks like Reckon does have international offices.

From this FAQ

"The Reckon Accounts range is built on the original QuickBooks code base"

We're in NZ and moved to the Intuit QuickBooks Online, which is completely web ui. The link between Ranger and QBO works fairly similar to the old QB link. It's just a shame that RangerMSP can't allow us to create/manage these links between Accounts/Items programmatically.

A lot of manual work ahead of us.

Thanks. Yes, the two way integration with QuickBooks Online is as "live" and two direction as the one with QuickBooks Desktop. There's no work around to the linking phase though :-( It's a bit of a shame that Intuit didn't kept the internal IDs of the different objects (customers, items) when converting a QuickBooks Desktop company file into a QuickBooks Online company.
