Is there a way to get alerted when someone puts in an opportunity for you?

There aren't Alerts sent to the Opportunity manager however the Account manager should get an Alert when an Opportunity is added for an Account.

How can we change that?

We dont use account managers, it creates too much noise. We want to be alerted if someone in the field puts in an opportunity so we can get moving on them right away.

Entering all the details and then sending the person an email isn't really saving us time.

You can use the Account manager - AND - in Outlook/Gmail use some filtering rule that will automatically move the email alerts you do not wish to receive, so while it will be sent to you, you will not notice it.

The filtering will be based on the email Subject that is formatted in a way that it is easy to add filtering rules by.

For more visit Email notifications subject format.
